Submissive President?
- Republican Presidential hopeful Michele Bachman was asked at the Ames Straw Poll debate if she would be a submissive president. This would seem sexist unless you knew that in 2006, she said wives should be submissive to their husbands. “My husband said ‘Now you need to go and get a post-doctorate degree in tax law.’ Tax law! I hate taxes—why should I go and do something like that? But the Lord says be submissive. Wives, you are to be submissive to your husbands.”
- Her answer at the Ames Straw Poll debate: “Marcus and I will be married for 33 years...I’m in love with him, I’m so proud of him. And what submission means to us...is respect. I respect my husband...and he respects me as his wife. that’s how operate our marriage. We respect each other, we love each other.”
- She decided to run for President after her husband and God told her to. “And in the midst of that calling, God then called me to run for the United States Congress. And I thought, what in the world would that be for? And my husband said “You need to do this.” And I wasn’t so sure. And we took three days, and we fasted and we prayed. And we said “Lord, is this what you want? Is this Your will?”

Doesn't Let the Facts Interfere with a Good Story:
Beware of China, India and the Soviet Union: “What people recognize is that there’s a fear that the United States is in an unstoppable decline. They see the rise of China, the rise of India, the rise of the Soviet Union and our loss militarily going forward. And especially with this very bad debt ceiling bill, what we have done is given a favor to President Obama, and the first thing he’ll whack is 500 billion out of the military defense at a time when we’re fighting three wars. People recognize that.”
When Standard & Poor's "dropped our credit rating, what they said is, we don't have an ability to repay our debt. ... I was proved right in my position" that the debt ceiling should not have been raised." Not according to PolitiFact.
While in Iowa, she told about her family's 1850's roots in that state, but it was near Iowa (not in it) and they didn't start the first Lutheran church in Iowa as she claimed. - Out of 23 Bachmann statements PolitiFact has checked since 2009, only one was rated true. Two were half true, four were barely true, nine were false, and seven were pants-on-fire false.
Conspiracy Theories:
Census conspiracy: She encouraged people to break the law by not filling out the census. According to The Washington Times, she said she will refuse to fill out anything more than the number of people in her household because, the questions have become “very intricate, very personal” and she also fears ACORN, the community organizing group that came under fire for its voter registration efforts last year, will be part of the Census Bureau’s door-to-door information collection efforts. Anti-American Congress: I wish the American media would take a great look at the views of the people in Congress and find out if they are 're pro-America or anti-America." - Swine flu: "I find it interesting that it was back in the 1970's that the swine flu broke out under another then Democratic president Jimmy Carter. I'm not blaming it on President Obama but I just think it's an interesting coincidence." (Swine flu broke out in 1976 under Republican president Gerald Ford.)
- We're running out of rich people in this country.
- We have moved into the realm of Gangsta Government: When you see the administration appoint czars...over 20 czars have been appointed... now have an imperial presidency...where the president has appointed various czars, all appointed to him.
Inspired by Liberty - Unless You Disagree With Her:
- Although she believes in pushing her own religious views on the rest of the world, she says that "Liberty inspires me and motivates me more than anything—just the concept of freedom, liberty, what it means. Whether it’s economic liberty, religious liberty, liberty in our finances, liberty in being able to choose the profession we have. That’s what inspired my relatives to come here back in the eighteen-fifties. It was the concept of liberty. That’s what motivates me today as well.”
- She thinks that the government should be involved in the most personal of decisions — even withdrawal of life support. When asked about the Terry Shiavo fight, Bachmann said , "I would have voted in favor of protecting the life of Terry Schiavo. She was a woman who was healthy. There was brain-damage there is no question, but from a health point of view she was not terminally ill."
- Separation of Church and State is a Myth: While speaking at a "You Can Run But You Cannot Hide" fundraiser she said, "[Public schools] are teaching children that there is separation of church and state, and I am here to tell you that is a myth. That’s not true,” Bachmann said at the group’s 2006 fundraiser in Minneapolis. “And they explain to children in the public school system what a myth that is. And that’s what I love about this ministry … We want kids to come to the truth and that’s why this ministry is so absolutely vital. We need them in every public school classroom across the state to tell young people, ‘You Can Run But You Cannot Hide.’”
